Star Wars Day Surprise: Darth Vader, Anakin, and a Mind-Bending New Illusion!

This Star Wars Day, we’re inviting visitors to the dark side…and back again.

From Friday 2 May to Monday 6 May, Camera Obscura & World of Illusions will be unveiling a truly unique new exhibit created right here by our own technical team: a Rubin Vase illusion that cleverly morphs between the shadowy profile of Darth Vader and the face of Anakin Skywalker.

Yes, you read that right. This isn’t just a trick of the light, it’s an exclusive, one-of-a-kind piece, designed in-house by our brilliant Technical Designer, Grant McGuigan, and it’s only on display this bank holiday weekend.

What is a Rubin Vase?

The Rubin Vase is a classic optical illusion that plays with how we perceive shapes and space. Depending on how you look at it, you’ll either see a vase in the centre or two faces looking at each other. It’s a fascinating example of what’s called “figure-ground perception”, where your brain flips between seeing the object and the background.

We’ve taken this mind-boggling idea and given it a blockbuster twist. As our vase rotates, a shadow is cast, one that slowly transforms from the unmistakable silhouette of Darth Vader to that of Anakin Skywalker. It’s an illusion that captures both the light and dark sides of one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
