One Million Visitors Since Reopening After Covid-19

Here at Camera Obscura & World of Illusions, Edinburgh's oldest purpose-built visitor attraction, we have welcomed one million visitors since reopening our doors in July 2020 following the first COVID-19 lockdown. This remarkable achievement not only signifies a triumphant recovery for the tourism industry but also reflects the enduring appeal of one of the city's most iconic attractions.
Our historic attraction, featuring five floors and over 100 interactive illusions suitable for all ages, has become a must visit destination for visitors seeking a unique and memorable experience. We are open from 8am to 10pm during peak seasons, the longest opening hours of any attraction in Edinburgh, in order to ensure we meets visitor demand, with the added bonus of seeing the city at all times of day from its panoramic rooftop terrace.

In addition to the tremendous milestone of one million visitors, we have garnered a series of prestigious awards, further cementing our status as an industry leader. Our attraction was recently honoured with a Scottish Thistle Award for Innovation in Tourism, recognising our creative and forward-thinking approach to providing a unique visitor experience.

Furthermore, our commitment to fair employment practices has been acknowledged with a National Trailblazer award from Living Wage Scotland, highlighting our attraction's dedication to looking after our staff. We also won the Regional Thistle Award for ‘Best Visitor Attraction’ for the second year in a row, showcasing Camera Obscura & World of Illusions as a standout destination within Scotland's diverse tourism landscape.

In an era where sustainability is paramount, we have also achieved a Gold Green Tourism award, demonstrating our commitment to environmentally responsible practices. This accolade reflects the ongoing efforts to minimize our ecological footprint and contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly tourism sector.

Andrew Johnson, General Manager, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Welcoming one million visitors since our reopening has been an incredible journey. We are immensely grateful for the support of our guests and the dedication of our team. This milestone not only marks our resilience in the face of challenges but also the enduring magic and wonder that Camera Obscura & World of Illusions brings to Edinburgh."

Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is a 5-star VisitScotland rated visitor attraction in the heart of Edinburgh and last year it was the 7th most visited paid attraction in Scotland. Housed in a historic building, we offer visitors the chance to get hands-on with over 100 interactive illusion exhibits and see a demonstration of the 170-year-old Camera Obscura and outstanding panoramic views of the city from the Rooftop Terrace. We have something to entertain all ages and are open every day from early until late, all year.
